Topic One : The Tough Questions
FIRST ASSIGNMENT: Materials—DUE August 30
First assignment during the first week of class was to bring some some expendable materials based on our name’s location on the role sheet.
I was in category D so that meant that I was to bring wild card materials.
I brought 2 floppy disks, some reflective plastic, a visor, a yo-yo, and 2 manipulated packaging material.
Out of which our group had 20 min. to make a piece that evokes the feeling of hope.

Show what you make. You can make anything. Ideally, it should be work that is representative of your larger body of work, and which is related to your larger goals and practice.
For the open project I had the urge to make something contradictory. In my usual body of work, I would combine the aspects of illustration, character design, graphic design, street wear and texture. I also love to mimic editorials to give it that propaganda type feeling.
So to be aware of the modern issues, I wanted to represent and express the contradiction of Free Speech but at the same time show the discourse of censorship. So I developed this narrative that if this contradiction further goes on we could be in a state of dystopian language that butchers our worded thoughts, feelings, and platforms. (reference to the Alex Jones dilemma) Basically,
Thus creating the image below:
Once that was done, I imported the image to Photoshop where I used Futura Bold or Barbra Kruger's Font.
Then I imported a texture sheet from my collection of rice paper textures and added more noise to up the grainy feeling more.
On critique day, Don and Kathleen were pretty close to what I was trying to deliver. It made me think on what I could've done to make it more easier to read. Also It had made sense that matting prints wasn't the ideal way to showcase work, mostly because that was the norm from my high school and freshmen experience. Maybe next time I could display it as one of those vintage, mint-conditioned comic books with the plastic covering to give off a more retro feel.
